If you find yourself constantly needing to clear your throat, don’t worry, you’re not alone. A recent Fox News article states that this frequent problem can be related to a variety of underlying reasons such as acid reflux, allergies, postnasal drip, or habit. Dr. Inna Husain, a laryngologist, says that persistent clearing of the throat is usually due to irritation in the voice box or the throat due to stomach acid, mucus, or allergens.
Rather than dismiss it, experts recommend treating the cause. For others, it can be managing reflux by diet modification, but others may require allergy treatment or mere hydration. Chronic throat clearing, if left unaddressed, can also damage the vocal cords. If it becomes a habitual behavior, medical consultation is advisable to prevent long-term damage.
