Massive Gas Cloud ‘Eos’ Discovered Near Our Solar System

Astronomers have found a gigantic interstellar gas cloud called Eos, situated about 94 parsecs (around 307 light-years) from the Sun. This dark molecular cloud consists mainly of molecular hydrogen and weighs an estimated 5,500 times as much as our Sun. Eos had not been detected earlier because it does not contain carbon monoxide, which is usually employed to track down such clouds. The detection of far-ultraviolet fluorescence from molecular hydrogen made the discovery possible. Located close to the edge of the Local Bubble a hot, ionized gas shell around our solar system Eos offers a rare chance to examine star formation mechanisms in our local galactic neighborhood. Scientists estimate that Eos will slowly disintegrate over the next 5.7 million years as a result of photoevaporation.
